With a history spanning over 150 years, Bharat’s census is the most extensive in the world. The European rulers, driven by materialistic motives, imposed rigid classifications that fragmented Bharat’s intricately woven social fabric into numerous categories and subcategories. Over time, these artificial divisions became ingrained in society, with even Bharatiyas accepting them as natural. The British used these identities to enforce their divide-and-rule strategy, while missionaries and Marxists further exploited them to deepen social divisions. One such classification is “Other Religions and Persuasions” (ORPs). In independent Bharat, this category has been used to promote a distinct “non-Hindu” identity among Janjatiya communities. This shift not only altered the demographic makeup of key regions but also contributed to the rise of anti-national activities in some areas.
