Description
The nation had to witness a horrible period in 1984 when after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the followers of Congress party took to the streets and targeted Sikhs under the excuse that the bodyguards who assassinated her were Sikhs. Forces across the borders were in any case waiting for such an event to happen to destabilise the country. In fact, they had made multiple attempts to create a wedge between Sikh and non-Sikh Hindus. They had particularly targeted the swayamsevaks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh with the hope that they would in-turn target Sikhs. Little did they know that the RSS swayamsevaks have the nation’s well-being on top of their mind and their hearts are full of love for Bharat mata.
It is this spirit that made many swayamsevaks risk their lives and save many Sikh families during that infamous period of 1984. This book was first published in Punjabi and then in Hindi.
Amidst fear, uncertainty, and social upheaval, countless ordinary citizens found themselves confronted with extraordinary circumstances. ‘Humanity Beyond Fear: Swayamsevaks in 1984’ brings together first hand accounts from survivors and witnesses across different parts of the country. Through these personal narratives, the book documents moments of courage, solidarity, and service that emerged during a time of profound crisis. It records how individuals, guided by a sense of duty and humanity, chose to stand beside their fellow citizens when fear threatened to divide communities. These testimonies are not merely recollections of the past. They are reminders that even in the most difficult moments, compassion can prevail over hatred, responsibility over indifference, and human values over circumstances.
By preserving these voices, the book offers future generations an opportunity to reflect on the strength of social bonds, the importance of moral courage, and the enduring power of humanity in times of adversity.
