In the Hindu tradition, the 14th day of every lunar month or the day before the new moon is known as Shivratri. However, the shivaratri in the month of Magha (amant ) & phalgun ( purnimant ) is known as Mahashivratri and is of great spiritual significance. This day is supposed to be extremely beneficial for svadhyaya ( self-study ) and dhyana ( meditation ) .
